The National Social Science Documentation Centre (NASSDOC), a division of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), serves as India’s premier national hub for research information and documentation in the social sciences. Established in 1970, NASSDOC plays a vital role in supporting scholars, educators, and research institutions by providing access to comprehensive academic and policy-related information resources.


Mission and Role

NASSDOC’s mission is to strengthen social science research by ensuring that scholars have access to the right information at the right time. It provides a range of documentation, information retrieval, reference, and research support services that enhance the visibility and accessibility of social science knowledge generated across India.


Functions and Key Activities

  • Acquisition, preservation, and dissemination of books, theses, reports, and digital resources in social sciences.

  • Maintenance of bibliographic and reference databases to help researchers locate relevant literature.

  • Provision of literature search, document delivery, interlibrary loan, and reprography services.

  • Support to ICSSR Regional Centres and Institutes in developing and sharing research information resources.

  • Conducting training programmes, workshops, and continuing education to enhance research and information management skills.


Collections and Digital Resources

NASSDOC houses a rich collection of over 19,000 books, 5,400 doctoral theses, 3,900 research project reports, and 12,500 bound journals along with microfilms and special collections. Its digital infrastructure includes access to major online databases and e-resources under ICSSR’s subscriptions and the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative.
Key digital platforms developed by NASSDOC include:

  • WebOPAC (Online Catalogue)

  • ICSSR Data Service

  • Directory of Open Access Social Science Resources

These platforms provide seamless nationwide access to e-books, e-journals, datasets, and research materials.

Applications are invited from graduates for one-year Apprenticeship Program at the National Social Science Documentation Centre



Applications are invited from graduates for the one-year Apprenticeship Program at the National Social Science Documentation Centre of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi. The candidate must have recently obtained a degree/diploma in Library and Information Science and should not be born before 1st January 1991. Total of six positions are available with the stipend of Rs.15000/- per month. The candidate must possess knowledge of computers, library automation, library software and data entry skills. Age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PH categories will be provided as per the norms of the Central Government. Only unemployed SC and ST Category candidates will be reimbursed 2nd class sleeper rail fare/bus fare from the shortest route on production of the original tickets. They must also submit an undertaking regarding their unemployment.

New Arrivals: List of New Additions with Summaries October, 2020

 Dear Scholar,


NASSDOC has been bringing out “New Arrivals: List of New Additions with Summaries” contains a list of Reference Works, New Books, acquired during the period and available for use in the National Social Science Documentation Centre of ICSSR.
In the main text, entries are arranged by Author, followed by bibliographical details and summary of the document. Books with editors have been arranged by title. The Keyword index is given at the end in which Keyword refers to the serial number of the entry in the main text.

Dear Scholars, 

NASSDOC has been bringing out “New Arrivals: List of New Additions with Summaries” contains a list of Reference Works, New Books, acquired during the period  April - June 2020, and available for use in the National Social Science Documentation Centre of ICSSR. In the main text, entries are arranged by Title wise followed by bibliographical details and summary of the document. An author index and subject index is given at the end in which the author & subject heading refers to the serial number of the entry in the main text. The bonafide library members may be borrowed for the interested books.
